Various precision parts Precision shaft machining Process Route

The formulation of a precision shaft machining process route involves establishing the overall layout of the manufacturing process. The primary tasks include selecting the appropriate machining methods for each surface feature, determining the sequence of operations for each surface feature, and specifying the number of operations required throughout the entire machining process.

Various Precision shaft machining The primary surface of hardware shaft components is the cylindrical surface of each journal. For hollow shafts, the precision of the inner bore is generally not high; however, for precision hardware shafts, the secondary surfaces—such as threads, splines, and keyways—require extremely high precision. Therefore, the machining process route for precision shafts primarily focuses on the sequence of operations for cylindrical parts, with the machining of secondary curved surfaces appropriately interspersed throughout. Below, we will introduce the machining routes for various types of precision hardware shaft components with different levels of precision, as well as the materials commonly used in their production.

1. General processing route for precision shafts made of general carburizing steel: Raw material preparation—forging—normalizing—drilling the top hole—rough turning—semi-finishing turning and finishing turning—carburizing (or carbon-nitrogen co-carburizing)—quenching and low-temperature tempering—rough grinding—secondary surface treatment—fine grinding; 2. General processing route for precision shafts made of general quenched-and-tempered steel: Raw material preparation—forging—normalizing (or annealing)—drilling the top hole—rough turning—quenching and tempering—semi-finishing turning and finishing turning—surface hardening and tempering—rough grinding—secondary surface machining—fine grinding; 3. Processing route for precision nitrided steel shaft parts: Raw material preparation—forging—normalizing (or annealing)—drilling the top hole—rough turning—finishing turning—semi-finishing turning and finishing turning—low-temperature aging—rough grinding—nitriding treatment—secondary surface treatment—fine grinding—light grinding; 4. Processing route for precision hardware shaft parts with through-hardening: Raw material preparation—forging—normalizing (or annealing)—drilling the top hole—rough turning—quenching and tempering—semi-finishing turning and finishing turning—secondary surface machining—through-hardening—rough grinding—low-temperature aging—fine grinding.

For general precision metal shaft parts, fine grinding is sufficient to ensure the processing quality of the operation. In addition to finishing operations, precision shaft parts should also be scheduled for precision machining. For shaft parts that are not subjected to through-hardening, the precision machining processes can be arranged—depending on the specific circumstances—either before or after the quenching heat treatment and prior to secondary surface finishing.

It should be noted that after quenching, ordinary cutting tools and shaft-type parts cannot be used. The primary surfaces of each shaft journal are cylindrical, and the inner bores of hollow shafts generally do not have high precision. Moreover, the secondary surfaces—such as threads, splines, and keyways—on precision spindles also demand extremely high precision. Therefore, the machining process route for precision shafts primarily focuses on the sequence of machining cylindrical parts, with the machining of secondary curved surfaces appropriately interspersed throughout.
